Best VOIP solution for Android

I have a new Galaxy Nexus. I'm looking for the best solution that will allow me, while overseas, to initiate calls to the US (or other countries). Research indicates that Skype is limited on mobile devices. But what works better? Fring? Google Talk?

For some of the calls (to family) I can pre-load the desktop version of the software so that I'll be making calls with product specific clients at both ends. But for other calls I'll want to be able to call a phone number in the receiving country.

I'll be using the service from Italy this spring and from SE Asia in the summer.

I have been using GrooveIP with my Google voice account.
Nimbuzz lets you makes free calls to other Nimbuzz users, also is an IM tool and cheap international calls.

Rallee – the free Facebook Android VoIP chat app

Social networks are great for staying in touch with friends and family. Free calls are awesome for the same reason – how about making free mobile calls via Facebook? Rallee does just that.

Rallee takes the usual Facebook messaging but makes it more personal thanks to allowing you to actually chat to your Facebook buddies via your mobile phone.

Text chat can be limiting and, sometimes, can lead to misunderstandings – even when emoticons are used.

Rallee is a free Facebook walkie-talkie app. It works with Android phones and once installed you are faced with a simple interface which enables you to have voice chats with your Facebook friends.

To talk, you simply click on the profile picture of the person you want to call, and if they’re online the call starts. You can either use the big red friendly ‘press to chat‘ button in walkie-talkie mode, or click on the mic icon to conduct a conventional two-way conversation as with Skype or a phone.

There are other cool features included in the app as well, including a feature which lets you have a group chat with a bunch of friends, or find someone near to you who shares the same interests and have a word with them.

The app uses data for the calls but, according to the developers, won’t hammer your data usage.

If you’re on WiFi it will be free to chat.

Vonage gives free VOIP calls and texts via Android app

Vonage has become a veritable player in the home phone industry in the US, thanks to ultra-cheap rates for its Voice Over Internet Protocol calling system. Now it’s making that service mobile via Android, and making a real case for VOIP-based service, if not VOIP-only phones. Customers who subscribe to Vonage at home can make domestic calls to anyone else with the app for free, and even those without an existing account can use the app to make calls to regular cell and landlines on a per-minute basis, Skype-style. The best part? It works on WiFi or mobile broadband, making Vonage a true mobile VOIP provider with no restrictions.

Other little touches surround the well thought-out app: a background service keeps an eye out for incoming calls to your Vonage number, and it integrates with your existing address book to check if you can call other Vonage customers or app users for free. Basic texting is included at no extra charge, much like the recently updated Google Voice. According to the app’s Android Market description, calls to to any number in the US, Canada or Puerto Rico will be free for a limited time… no matter where in the world your call originates.

There are a few restrictions. Calling when connected to a mobile network uses data instead of minutes, so using Vonage to completely replace your cell phone plan could get expensive fast. And the free US and Canada offer is limited to 3000 total minutes a month – though if you’re talking on the phone for 50 hours over 30 days, you’ll probably appreciate the gesture anyway. On that note, one impressive convenience feature is that you can add pre-paid calling credit directly from your Android Market account. Download the Vonage app for free here.
